The State of North Carolina would like to improve its online service for entrepreneurs and new business owners. Currently, service is distributed across several sites, they wish to create a ‘one-stop’ experience.

The state of North Carolina is creating an Innovation Center in downtown Raleigh, which will feature the state's innovation. It will contain several large format touch displays, and needs interactive content for them. In this project you will construct simple visualizations of state data to meet this need.

The state of North Carolina is moving to give its citizens greater access to public data. Current sites are minimally functional at best. In this project you will implement a mobile or web prototype improving access to that data, and leaving citizens with a positive experience accessing state information.

Approachable analytics for SAS users
As our world becomes increasingly data rich, tools for understanding that data must move out of the lab and into boardrooms, conference rooms, and ultimately living rooms. Analytics software must become increasingly useable, understandable, and approachable. In this project you will meet with SAS clients to define experiential goals and identify specific interface components for analysis, measure the experience delivered by those visuals or components, sketch several possible improvements that you believe will improve the experience of those components, and prototype and evaluate one of them. Among other tools, evaluation may make use of an Epoc Emotiv EEG sensor provided by SAS.

Approachable visual analytics for indirect SAS users
Today’s analytics tools generate a wide range of visuals meant to make the information in large datasets easier to understand. Unfortunately, because the visuals themselves often require a certain level of expertise before they can be comprehended, even highly educated viewers may have trouble understanding these visuals. This makes it difficult for expert SAS users to deliver the knowledge they produce to “indirect” users, who must understand and act on that knowledge, even though they do not directly use the software itself. In this project you will meet with SAS clients to better understand their specific experiential goals and problem visuals, evaluate the understandability and experience of those visuals in SAS tools, sketch several improvements that you believe will make those visuals more approachable, and prototype and evaluate one of them. Among other tools, evaluation may make use of an Epoc Emotiv EEG sensor provided by SAS.

Multiple Sclerosis Patient Dashboard and Feedback Tool
There is tremendous potential for mobile hardware and software to improve disease management in chronic disease such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Using mobile devices, patients can log their symptoms. However, real utility requires an engaging and persuasive user experience to be maintained over the long-term. The project challenge is to create a visual dashboard and/or messaging program utilizing the patient's underlying personal diary as a database. Students will have the opportunity to explore various communication and persuasion strategies (graphical vs. text, emotional vs. logical, etc.) with the goal of impacting patient behavior such as maintaining regimen adherence.
